Turning Car Parks into Clean Energy Hubs

As the UK accelerates its push towards net-zero, the question of how to scale green infrastructure without compromising land use has never been more pressing. One promising answer? Build up, not out.

Instead of covering precious farmland with solar panels, companies are now looking to car parks – underused, sun-drenched expanses of concrete – to host solar carports. These structures provide welcome shade for parked vehicles while also generating clean electricity, making them a highly practical use of space.

A major development in this space came recently, with Egg acquiring the solar car park construction division of 3ti Energy Hubs. Backed by Liberty Global, Egg is positioning itself as a leader in integrated solar, battery storage in EV charging solutions.

The potential for solar car parks is enormous. In Europe, France has already mandated solar installations for large car parks – a move that’s led to landmark projects like the solar canopy at Disneyland Paris, which alone generates 31 GWh annually. The UK is now considering a similar mandate following a recent government consultation. If adopted, such legislation could significantly boost the adoption of solar car parks nationwide.

As solar infrastructure like carports become mainstream, the legal complexity around land use, energy contracts, planning permissions, and financing is increasing rapidly. Whether its navigating the legal intricacies of large-scale clean energy installations or advising on corporate acquisitions like Egg’s, the demand for legal talent with renewables specific expertise is growing.
